Due to unsuitable conditions at the resorts, organizers have announced that the Subaru Freeride Series at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows has been cancelled. The competition was scheduled to take place March 27-30 at the resorts, and while conditions are perfect for spring shredding, they aren’t a good fit for an extreme snowboarding competition, and thus the contest has been scrapped. The series of Freeride World Qualifiers will move forward with its next scheduled stop, at Telluride Ski Resort, March 20-23, and then on to Big Sky Resort, April 2-7.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (March 20, 2014)- The Subaru Freeride Series Freeride World Qualifiers (FWQ) at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows previously scheduled March 27-30, 2014 have been cancelled due to unsuitable conditions for competitive freeride. Conditions at the resorts are prime for spring skiing with fun corn snow and T-shirt temperatures. A number of activities will continue to be offered every weekend at Squaw Valley throughout the remainder of the season including Pain McShlonkey celebration in honor of Shane McConkey, March 29, and the “Skinny Ski-a-Thon” benefit for the High Fives Foundation, March 31.

“Visitors to Squaw Valley this spring will be sure to enjoy soft snow and an incredible atmosphere,” remarked Squaw Valley Resort Marketing Manager Sean Kristl. “Remember to bring your sunscreen!”

The Subaru Freeride Series will continue forward with competitions at Telluride Ski Resort, March 20-23, and Big Sky Resort, April 2-7. The final event in Big Sky, MT will also feature the Junior Freeride World Championships with top athletes from Europe and North America competing alongside one another.

“While Squaw Valley has great spring skiing throughout the mountain, freeride competitions require specific conditions to provide a safe and quality venue for the athletes,” commented Bryan Barlow, Subaru Freeride Series event director. “Fans and athletes alike love Squaw Valley. We look forward to returning here soon.”
