Performing at your greatest physical capability transcends what sport or lifestyle you are involved in. Think about the last time you held your breath underwater. It’s an unsettling experience right? Well imagine the mental and physical strain of doing it for five minutes, or longer. Ben Ferguson was invited by Red Bull to participate in a High Performance camp to stretch the limits of lung capacity, which channels your thoughts and energy to increase focus in stressful situations. At first thought it seems unlikely for someone to hold their breath this long without proper training, but Ben and his fellow athletes managed it without issue. Talk about high performance training…

Ben Ferguson - Kona Breath Hold Training

From Red Bull:

A diverse group of Red Bull athletes recently spent time in Hawaii as part of a Red Bull High Performance camp challenging their mental and physical limits to hold their breath for up to five minutes. But exactly how does learning to hold your breath for a long period have anything to do with improving an athlete’s overall performance? In theory, if an athlete can learn how to control their breathing and stay relaxed under uncomfortable and stressful circumstances, then they will also be able to perform at a high level during challenging moments while performing their sport. This Red Bull High Performance camp, originally designed as a survival camp for big wave surfers to develop their ability to hold their breath in extreme situations with increased confidence and comfort, has now been opened up to athletes from multiple disciplines. This video – http://win.gs/1yWkf0a – captures the emotions and competitive spirit between the athletes at the most recent breath hold camp which included snowboarder Ben Ferguson; freeskier Bobby Brown; Olympic slopestyle skiing champion Dara Howell; professional gamer Jimmy Ho; motorsports legends Travis Pastrana and Tarah Gieger; surf ironman Matt Poole and surf ironwoman Jordan Mercer.
